We make sure you don’t purchase a car that is not allowed as Australian rules are strict on what you can bring in. We run you through all the steps as we go along, we are reachable not only through emails and messages but also via phone if you need during business hours and Saturday. If you really need, you can come in and see us, you can’t do that with most if not all other brokers!!
2. Find a CAR
Finding cars in Japan is the easy part, the tough part is finding the car that suites you, this is what you need to decide. Once you give us a description of what sort of car (condition, colour, type, budget) will we pick cars from the auction that suite you, we have access to all the auctions in Japan and all cars can be checked before bidding on them. Every car you decide to make a bid on we will give you a detailed description of the vehicle before the auction. Our buyer in Japan has been dealing with us for nearly 15 years and has earned our trust. Occasionally customers request to purchase from dealers in Japan, generally you will find them to be more expensive and no different than purchasing from dealers in Australia, so you may as well purchase your car locally as you get to see and feel the car! We can’t guarantee the description of the cars from dealers as we have had no dealings with them. But if that’s what you want we will still organise it for you!
Once you have found and purchased the car, you will receive a invoice directly from the supplier which you will need to organise payment within 5-7 days from purchase. The invoice will include charges to get your vehicle to the boat generally called “FOB” this stands for Freight On Board. We can help get a competitive exchange rate for you compared to the banks or you can simply go to your bank and organise the transfer over the counter. While you are organising the payments the supplier will organise the necessary paperwork for export. Depending on which state you are from most boats take 14-20 days to get here.
While your vehicle is getting shipped we will need to organise a Compliance Centre to get a Import approval (VIA-Vehicle Import Approval) in order to get the car released from customs once it arrives to the Australian Port. We have access to Compliance Centres in every state and get very competitive pricing. The process is quite simple, you submit a enquiry via our compliance page on our site supplying the chassis number supplied to you by the Japanese supplier invoice. The compliance centre depending on which state you are will get back to you regarding the price. Prices vary depending on which state you are in. The average price for compliance is $2000 to $3000. Sometimes it can exceed the $3000 mark if the vehicle is unique or the cost of obtaining the licence was too high. The compliance prices do not include tyres as it really depends on what state you are in and how Road Worthy your tyres are. It does not also include any maintenance requirements for registration purpose, this all depends on the condition of the vehicle you picked.
3. Customs Duties and Shipping
Once your car arrives to Australia we will organise the necessary paperwork to release your car from the port, this process usually takes 3-5 working days from the arrival date, we will advise you of the arrival date. The total cost depends on the cost of your vehicle and the exchange rate, this includes your shipping, clearance costs, GST, Duty, Port charges, delivery Charges, Quarantine fees and steam cleaning. We will give a more accurate figure once we know which car you are importing. You will be billed directly by the Customs Agent and usually they require payment straight away, it is important you pay these guys quickly as any delays result in storage costs at the port which start at $70 per day.
4. Compliance process
The compliance process takes usually 2 weeks most of it being With DOTARS (Department of Transport), while the vehicle is getting complied It will get checked for the registration process, the centre will get in touch with you directly for any work that is required e.g. tyres brakes, suspension, bushes etc. Once the Compliance Plate has been approved, You will receive the bill directly from the compliance centre. Depending on which state you are in we can get very competitive pricing compared to you enquiring direct. If you have a preferred centre and want to use them we can still organise it.
5. Registration and Delivery
This is the final stage of the process before you can pick your car up or have it organised for delivery. Usually during the compliance process you would have received a list of items that need fixing for roadworthy purpose which need to be done before registration. You can organise the Compliance centre to register on your behalf or you could do it yourself to save some money, it’s entirely up to you. Some compliance centres incorporate this cost in their compliance fee, we have kept this off the compliance price giving you the opportunity to save some money. This is the same for delivery, it can be organised for you or you are welcome to get a ride off a mate and pick it up yourself.
