ROAD WORTHY CERTIFICATES (RWC)

A Certificate of Roadworthiness is a certificate issued by a licensed tester certifying the vehicle has been inspected and at the time of the inspection meets the roadworthiness requirements as set out by VIC Roads. In other words, a certificate of road worthiness certifies the vehicle has undergone a safety inspection and is fit for use on the road.

A RWC is NOT a certificate of compliance with the standards for registration and is NOT a comprehensive check of the vehicle.

In Victoria a Road Worthy Certificate is required when a vehicle is transferred from one owner to another, or if a vehicle is unregistered or has its registration cancelled for some reason by VIC Roads. The purpose of a RWC (Road Worthy Certificate) is to reduce unsafe vehicles on our roads usually due to poorly maintained vehicles. RWC can only be issued by an APPROVED VEHICLE TESTER from VIC Roads. Approved Vehicle Testers must display a sign in front of their building like the one in the picture below. If you don’t see this at a workshop and that workshop is claiming to do a RWC on your Vehicle you should contact VIC Roads and also take your vehicle elsewhere.

HOW IS A RWC CONDUCTED?

When you present a Vehicle your vehicle will go through a inspection by a approved tester who uses the guidelines set by VIC Roads. Below is a brief outline of the process:

Stage One: Inside vehicle checks

Stage Two: Outside vehicle checks

Stage Three: Lamps and signals

Stage Four: Under bonnet checks

Stage Five: Under body checks

Stage Six: Road Test

Once the check has been conducted there are 2 things that can happen

  1. Vehicle passes and a Road Worthy Certificate will be issued to the presenter (green copy)
  2. Vehicle fails and a list of items that need to fixed within 7 days issued (pink copy) PLEASE NOTE: you must return the vehicle for a re inspection within 7 days with all items listed on the pink copy fixed, otherwise the vehicle will have to be rebooked for a new RWC inspection incurring a new charge. This is a VIC Roads requirement.
